Environmental and Energy Technologies

Bachelor of Technology (BT)


Graduates with an Environmental and Energy Technologies (EET) Bachelor of Technology degree are environmental professionals, ready for a career in the fields of renewable energy, waste management or soil and water resource.

More importantly, EET graduates will have the foundation to continue learning, adapt to changing technologies and grow into new jobs. The degree blends science with skill; balances principles with practice; and tempers technology with business and art. Students have many opportunities to see, touch, examine, build, assemble, test and acquire first-hand experience with the technologies that interest them.

EET Students can choose among three concentrations of study, called advisement tracks:

Water Resources Management

Water resources students can expect to learn about water in the natural environment including:

  • Water quality
  • Watersheds
  • Hydrology
  • Flood control
  • Erosion prevention
  • Ecology
  • Soil and water conservation
  • Wetlands
  • Stream flow
  • Other natural resource topics

Many graduates of this concentration are hired by environmental and agricultural agencies like the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, watershed associations and environmental protection groups.


Waste Management

Waste management students deal with the nature, sources, handling and use of agricultural and municipal waste materials. Topics include:

  • Waste Generation
  • Waste Collection
  • Landfills
  • Land application
  • Environmental impacts Characteristics of waste materials
  • Reuse and recycle
  • Composting
  • Energy generation

Professions in waste management are plentiful in the United States because there are few college programs supporting the industry. 

Renewable Energies

Renewable Energy is the most popular of the three. Students who choose this concentration train for professions in the emerging renewable energy fields including solar, wind, biomass fuels and energy used and conservation.

While learning about renewable energy, SUNY Cobleskill students have:

  • modified a John Deere gator to run on wood pellets
  • made biodiesel fuel from waste cooking oils
  • constructed and wired portable solar photovoltaic systems
  • designed and equipped a commercial-scale mobile pellet-making system for grass fuel
  • developed an experimental heat engine that is moved by low temperature waste heat
  • conducted research on a novel waste-to-electricity rotary gasifier
  • toured a variety of renewable energy sites including biomass boiler factory, solar and wind farms, biomass pellet factories, anaerobic digester's and waste-to-energy power plants

Nearly every renewable energy course has a laboratory to encourage hands-on learning and many involve field work at renewable energy facilities. To fulfill the degree's internship requirement, students have completed internships as wind energy technicians, solar voltaic system planners and installers, solar energy sales and sales support, waste-to-energy plant technicians and research technicians working on a variety of research projects.

Environmental and Energy Technologies programming at SUNY Cobleskill is designed to provide students a valuable education with an emphasis on real-life skills taught through hands-on courses in laboratories, field work and internships.

During the freshman and sophomore years, students establish a strong general foundation in science and technology. In those first semesters, students are familiarized with the principles and practices of industries within EET. Courses about specific technology and applications dominate the junior and senior semesters based on the student's chosen concentration. Students in all concentrations are required to take nine credits of business courses to prepare for careers in management positions. 

All EET students are also encouraged to fulfill a 12-credit internship in their specialized field as an upperclassmen to gain experience before graduation.
